Take the Clean Cruising Pledge
Join the coalition to clean up cruise ships
Carnival Corporation could choose to protect the Arctic, the oceans, and the climate by ditching the heavy fuel oil that currently powers most of the ships in its global fleet. Instead, it is doubling down on false solutions and half-steps.
Carnival may not be swayed by concerns of environmental degradation – but they will pay attention to consumer pressure. Carnival needs to understand that, until it becomes a climate leader, it will lose out on thousands of potential customers – customers who care about the planet.
Dozens of countries are calling for a phase-out of heavy fuel oil in the Arctic. Indigenous leaders from across the Arctic have also called for a heavy fuel oil phaseout to protect their territorial waters upon which they depend for food and their traditional ways of life. If Carnival respects the will of those that have called the Arctic home for tens of thousands of years, it would be doing everything in its power to minimize its climate pollution and oil spill risk. It could start now by switching to cleaner fuel — beginning with the Arctic and Subarctic biomes.
Take the Clean Cruising Pledge today and let Carnival know that its actions will impact its bottom line.
Letter to Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald:
Dear Mr. Donald,
Carnival is the world’s largest cruise company and it is failing to protect our climate and the Arctic.
Your company’s use of heavy fuel oil (HFO) contributes to an accelerated pace of Arctic sea ice melt due to significant soot emissions, puts this delicate ecosystem at unnecessary risk of an irreversible environmental catastrophe in the event of an HFO spill, and threatens Arctic communities’ lives and livelihoods.
While Carnival publicizes its environmental initiatives and values, as CEO you have not committed to ending the use of one of the world’s dirtiest fossil fuels – HFO. We applaud efforts to reduce dangerous sulfur dioxide emissions in ways that do not contribute to greater water pollution, but these will never be a replacement for ending the use of HFO in the Arctic. Rather than being a part of the problem, it’s time for Carnival to lead the way and adopt clean shipping solutions!
We the undersigned urge you to:
- Switch all of the cruise ships in your fleets to low-sulfur diesel fuel, and immediately end the use and carriage as fuel of all heavy fuel oil and heavy fuel oil blends in Canada, Alaska, and Arctic routes, to reduce the black carbon (soot) pollution that greatly accelerates snow and ice melt and threatens polar wildlife, communities, and ecosystems in the event of a spill.
- Further, reduce black carbon pollution on all Carnival Corp. ships by installing diesel particulate filters on all fleets.
- Take the lead in developing and implementing clean shipping technologies that help power cruise ships without fossil fuels completely!
The places we all love depend on it!
